Murphy to brief Commons today on bank raid

Secretary of State Paul Murphy will brief the British Parliament today on the £26.5 million Northern Bank robbery.

Secretary of State Paul Murphy will brief the British Parliament today on the £26.5 million Northern Bank robbery.

With police chiefs publicly blaming the IRA for the raid, attempts to restore Northern Ireland's power-sharing administration have been shattered.

The British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, and Taoiseach Mr Bertie Ahern, who have been pressing for a peace deal in Ulster, were left angry and frustrated by the assessment.

PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde's declaration effectively accuses the IRA of plotting Britain's biggest-ever heist at the same time as negotiations with republicans and unionists came agonisingly close to reviving devolution at Stormont.

Mr Blair and Mr Ahern believed they had brokered a truce that would see all Provisional operations, both violent and criminal, brought to an end.

The proposed settlement only broke down over demands by Dr Ian Paisley 's DUP for photographic proof of IRA disarmament.

Both the Taoiseach and Mr Blair have now conceded a deal to restore devolution had been seriously damaged by the December 20th robbery during which two families were held hostage.

Mr Paisley is due to meet Mr Blair this week when he will call on the Government to form a devolved administration without republicans.

Before that, however, Mr Murphy will make a statement to the House of the Commons on the whole episode has caused to the process. MPs will also be given the chance to debate power-sharing in the province.
