Murphy to give assessment of peace process

Northern Ireland Secretary Mr Paul Murphy will today outline the British government's assessment of the peace process.

He ill also face questions by members of the Oireachtas and British politicians at a session of the British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body in Manchester.

The body includes representatives from the Dáil and Westminster as well as the Scottish and Welsh Assemblies and bodies from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

The occasion will also be marked by a presentation to Mr Murphy on his 54th birthday by joint chairman of the group, Labour's Mr David Winnick and Mr Brendan Smith of Fianna Fail.

Questions lined up for Mr Murphy will include queries on Sellafield as well as the level of British government backing being given to the joint Irish-Scottish bid to secure the European Nations Soccer Championship in 2008.
