Andy Murray is expecting a much tougher time in his maiden US Open third round appearance than the crushing victory he enjoyed over Italy's Alessio Di Mauro.

The 19-year-old British number one and 17th seed demolished Di Mauro 6-0 6-1 6-1 yesterday to set up a last 32 meeting with 10th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez.

The Chilean, seven years Murray's senior, will represent a considerable step up in class from Di Mauri and the Scot is under no illusions over the task at hand.

He said: "He's had a really, really good summer. He made semis in LA, semis in Toronto, semis in Cincinnati, and he's won his first two matches comfortably here.

"It's not a match that I'm expected to win. It's just supposed to be a close match."

Left-hander Di Mauro had won his only previous meeting with Murray until last night, in a challenger on the Italian's home country and on his favourite surface of clay. It was that seemingly forgettable 6-2 6-1 defeat, in March 2005, at the start of Murray's professional career which fired the Scot to success.

"I played pretty well today. I wanted to beat him after I lost pretty badly against him last time we played," said Murray, who was only 17 when the pair first met. "So I wanted to go out there and play a good match. It's amazing how much difference a year makes."
