Hundreds of paramilitary police in Naples have arrested 52 people suspected of links to organised crime in dawn raids across the city.

Members of the Carabinieri police, backed by helicopters, swooped on the poor districts of Secondigliano and Scampia as they targeted the Camorra organised crime syndicate.

The operation, ordered by the Naples prosecuter, was prompted by a turf war that has led to the deaths of at least 20 people in the past month.

Investigators say the violence stems from a power struggle over drug trafficking within the Di Lauro clan, part of the Camorra group.
