A NATO F-18 squadron backed up by two AWAC surveillance craft will patrol the skies above next week's EU summit in Seville, the Spanish defense ministry said today.
The squadron will be placed on maximum alert at the two-day summit starting on June 21st in the Spanish city in order to guarantee the security of EU heads, the source said.
Two F-18s would also fly over Seville throughout the summit, the EL Mundo daily reported today.
According to the paper, an anti-aircraft missile battery will be deployed at Seville airport with military transport aircraft ferrying in some 8,500 police the day before the summit is due to begin.
Spanish unions have called a general strike in the city on June 20th in protest at government plans to reform unemployment benefit allocations.
