Nenagh man likely to run Galway council

A Tipperary man is expected to become the new manager of Galway City Council early in the new year, writes Lorna Siggins.

A Tipperary man is expected to become the new manager of Galway City Council early in the new year, writes Lorna Siggins.

Mr Joe McGrath is currently director of services for community and enterprise and waste management with Kerry County Council.

Originally from Nenagh and in his early 40s, Mr McGrath was among 12 short-listed candidates for the post.

He will be responsible for 400 office and outdoor staff and an annual budget of between €60 million and €70 million. He will also be responsible for implementing the Galway City Development Plan, the draft version of which is on public display.

Mr McGrath's appointment is subject to approval by Galway city councillors.
