Every year 1,600 Irish women are told they have breast cancer, according to the latest figures from the Irish Cancer Society. To help them cope with the trauma of the diagnosis and treatment the society has published a patient information booklet, Under- standing Breast Cancer.

The 64-page booklet has been produced in response to requests from patients and medical professionals.

Cancer specialists, including Prof Niall O'Higgins of St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin, former breast cancer patients and medical and nursing professionals have contributed to the publication, which will be available free from breast cancer treatment centres.
