There were 15,048 new private cars licensed in June compared with 14,942 in the same month last year - an increase of 0.7 per cent, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

First licensing of second-hand private cars increased by 1,665 or 50.1 per cent on the same month last year.

The number of new goods vehicles licensed was 3,989 in June 2006, compared with 3,693 in the corresponding month last year, a increase of 8 per cent.

The vehicle licensing figures also show that the total number of all vehicles licensed in June increased by 10.4 per cent when compared with the same month in 2005.

The total number of all new vehicles licensed during June was 20,628 compared with 20,185 during the same month in 2005 - an increase of 2.2 per cent.

The highest number of new private cars licensed in June, classified by make are Toyota (2,204), followed by Volkswagen (1,921), Ford (1,575) Nissan (1,316), Opel (1,189) and Peugeot (688).
