The number of new cars licensed in the State last month was more than 134 per cent up on October last year, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
There were a total of 3,742 new private cars licensed or taxed for road use during the month compared with 1,596 recorded during October last year.
However, the number of new goods vehicles licensed in October was 711 compared with 803 in the corresponding month last year, a decrease of 11.5 per cent.
The highest number of new private cars licensed in October, classified by make, was Renault (967) followed by Toyota (470), Volkswagen (445) and Ford (295).
The figures showed said the total number of all vehicles licensed was 8,698 compared with 8,038 in October, increase of 8.2 per cent.
The total number of all new vehicles licensed in October was 4,838 compared with 2,790 during the same month in 2009 - an increase of 73.4 per cent.
Of the 3,742 new private cars licensed, some 1,019 (27 per cent) were petrol and 2,427 (64.9 per cent) were diesel.
