The Minister for Education, Ms Breathnach, has appointed Ms Cliona de Bhaldraithe Marsh as the new chairwoman of the Institiuid Teangeolaiochta Eireann (ITE) Linguistics Institute of Ireland.
A lecturer in German in University College Dublin, she is only the second person to hold the chair in ITE since its foundation in 1972.
Prof Conn O Cleirigh served as chairman from that year until his death in April 1995.
Ms de Bhaldraithe Marsh, who is daughter of the lexicographer Tomas de Bhaldraithe, gas recently elected to the governing body of UCD and is a former member of the RTE Authority.
