ALL THE news from Gaza is not dreadful. Shortly after 3am yesterday, a baby was born to Ru’a, the sister-in-law of Jaber Wishah, deputy director of the Gaza-based Palestinian Human Rights Centre.
The 2.8kg boy, named Fae’d, was born, “with a miracle”, in hospital. Wishah, who has been sheltering with 27 members of his family at a brother’s house in Nuseirat camp in central Gaza, was interviewed by The Irish Times on Wednesday.
“My brother contacted the Red Crescent centre and asked them to send an ambulance. We could not use the two cars we had. They said it depends if the shelling stops. In 10 minutes they responded positively and asked my brother to go outside the house with a torch to show the way. It was completely dark.
“This was very dangerous because Israeli drones were flying overhead and he risked being bombed. The ambulance came slowly. Wishah’s sister and Ru’a went together to the nearest hospital and the baby, her first, came 15 minutes later. We were afraid he would be premature but he’s okay.”
The baby’s father, Yasser, is working in Arkansas.
