The Environmental Protection Agency is to chair an implementation group set up to enforce recommendations to rehabilitate Silvermines, an area in Co Tipperary, which suffers from the effects of lead. The recommendations came in a report by an inter-agency group, after post-mortem examinations on cattle showed significant levels of lead in their blood.
The EPA will report every six months to the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources, implement recommendations from the inter-agency report on water-quality monitoring, and establish an expert group on lead and advise North Tipperary County Council on measures to taken to reverse the effects of lead in the region.
