A new railway station will open today at Monasterevan, Co Kildare, which has not been served by trains since the old station closed in 1976.

Iarnr≤d ╔ireann said there will be five services in each direction from the new station from Monday to Saturday.

Construction of the station, which includes a 50-space car park, cost £2.5 million and was funded under the National Development Plan.

The station also has a bridge with hydraulic lifts to accommodate wheelchairs.

Iarnr≤d ╔ireann also announced that, from today, it has increased capacity on the Maynooth line at peak periods.

The 08.05 Maynooth to Pearse Street and the 18.10 Pearse Street to Maynooth trains will be increased from six to eight carriages.
