Road building in Ireland will take on a new transparency with the opening of a road made up of 40 per cent glass instead of the traditional hard rock. The road is being officially opened in Co Monaghan today by the Minister for Environment and Local Government, Mr Dempsey.
The NRA-funded scheme, which was carried out by Monaghan County Council on the N2 north of Carrickmacross, contains more than a million crushed and recycled bottles. This first-in-the-State pilot project is likely to be continued in other areas where road schemes are planned.
An NRA spokesman said yesterday: "It is the first time we have used recycled glass in a scheme of this kind anywhere in the country and we are optimistic that it will be a very successful process commending itself to other similar schemes countrywide."
