A plan to build a new street in the scenic lakeside village of Ballina in Co Tipperary has been approved by North Tipperary County Council.

The development, situated close to Lough Derg, will involve the construction of 34 town houses, six apartments, nine duplex units and four buildings that will be used for shops or offices.

The planning application, submitted by seven named developers, will link Ballina Quay and the Portroe Road. The population of the village has more than doubled in the last 10 years, as it came in to the commuter belt of Limerick city, Nenagh and Shannon.

One of the developers, Limerick architect Michael Barker, said the consortium would be happy to meet the council's request to set aside 20 per cent of the dwellings for social and affordable housing.

It was hoped to promote a holiday development, but no more than one-third of the dwelling units built would be used for this purpose, he said.
