New legislation banning teenagers under the age of 16 from using jetskis or powerboats came into effect yesterday

New legislation banning teenagers under the age of 16 from using jetskis or powerboats came into effect yesterday. Teenagers under 16 will also be obliged to wear lifejackets, while adults must wear lifejackets when waterskiing or being towed by any type of craft.

The legislation has been introduced by the Minister for the Marine, Mr Fahey, as part of a package of measures aimed at regulating pleasure craft, including jetskis and powerboats. Regulations relating to insurance and registration of recreational craft are currently being considered by his Department.
