Newcastle are set to launch an audacious bid to bring Brazilian World Cup star Rivaldo to the Premiership.
The Magpies have already contacted Spanish side Barcelona about the 30-year-old South American, who is out of contract next summer, although any deal is as yet a long way off.
Newcastle were not commenting on the matter today, but sources close to both clubs have indicated that there is a genuine interest in a player who is currently engaged in Brazil's World Cup campaign in the Far East, although his price tag could be well in excess of the Stg£10million which has been reported.
One of the player's advisors told PA International today: "Newcastle are interested in Rivaldo but no official offer has been received from Newcastle or any other club for the time being.
"Rivaldo's intention is to stay at Barcelona and finish his contract, but he is an intelligent man, he will look at the possible offers and decide what is best for his future career.
"Rivaldo is with Brazil at the World Cup and is not aware of what's going on."
