Newman Church celebrates 150th anniversary

The 150th anniversary of the consecration of Dublin's famous Newman University Church will be marked today.

The 150th anniversary of the consecration of Dublin's famous Newman University Church will be marked today.

Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism John O'Donoghue will unveil a plaque at the St Stephen's Green building, and Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin will later celebrate a special Ascension Thursday service.

A postage stamp will also be unveiled by Minister for Justice Michael McDowell, who was baptised and married in the church.

The building's interior was designed in Byzantine style by architect John Hungerford Pollen under the direct instruction of Cardinal John Henry Newman.

Cardinal Newman, born in London in 1801, was the first rector of the Catholic University of Ireland which later became University College Dublin.

"The University Church, which I have a lifelong affection for, is more than a beautiful building with a long and rich history," Mr McDowell said. "It is a place of celebration, reflection and worship; a place of memories for many, both sad and joyous."
