The distribution of meat and poultry across the Britain from a coldstore company in Northern Ireland has been halted amid a Food Standards Agency investigation.

The investigation is focusing on repackaging and relabelling operations at the Eurofreeze (Ireland) Ltd plant in Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh after emerging evidence suggesting the use of illicit health marks, the agency said.

It added that at this stage "no specific food safety issues have been identified in relation to any particular products".

But it said it would be carefully examining evidence as the investigation continued and would issue updates as appropriate.

The FSA said the investigation related to "a large quantity of foodstuffs found in the coldstore".

It added: "The focus of the inquiry is on repackaging and relabelling activity on the premises."

The investigation follows a visit to the premises last week by Department of Agriculture and Rural Development officials, accompanied by PSNI officers, which led to the contents of the coldstore being detained and any further distribution of meat stopped, said the FSA.

"Initial examination of the evidence has led to the FSA suspending the licence of the coldstore today," the agency said.

"Emerging evidence suggests the use of illicit health marks. Apparently legitimate products correctly health marked were also found on the premises.

"The agency has today alerted the European Commission and all local authorities to these findings."

The investigation has identified a number of companies that have received products from the company.
