A Co Tyrone farmer has been fined £250 for causing unnecessary suffering to animals.

Patrick Francis Donaghy (23), of Creggan Road, Carrickmore, was told by Mr Mervyn Bates at Cookstown Magistrates Court yesterday that he was horrified by photographs showing the conditions in which he kept his livestock.

The court was told that when police officers visited Donaghy's farm near Pomeroy on March 18th last they found a dead cow and another in such a poor condition that it had to be put down. Another animal was half buried in slurry.

Mr Francis Rafferty, defending, said the animals were well fed, but Donaghy accepted the conditions in which they were kept were poor.
