A prisoner who overdosed at Northern Ireland's Maghaberry Prison was flown to a London hospital yesterday for a liver transplant operation.

The 31 year old man, who comes from Co Derry, was in intensive care in a Belfast hospital before being flown out about 5 a.m.

He is now in King's College Hospital where his condition is understood to be serious. The prisoner is on remand on sex charges and cannot be named. Before he could leave for London he had to be granted bail at an emergency sitting in the High Court in Belfast last Wednesday night.

Mr Justice Campbell ordered his release after being told that the prisoner was too ill to be present.
