JUNIOR CERT BUSINESS STUDIES HIGHER AND ORDINARY:NO SURPRISES awaited Junior Cert business studies students as they opened their exam papers.

“Nicely pitched and well balanced” was the verdict on both higher- and ordinary-level papers.

Higher-level students had a long day, with both a morning and afternoon paper. They should have been fairly happy overall, according to TUI subject representative Ivan O’Callaghan.

The short questions were “challenging”, said Sr Mary O’Connell of the Business Studies Teachers Association of Ireland.

But that was expected at higher level, she said, and students seemed “fairly happy” with that section.

The longer questions offered a reasonably broad choice of topical questions. “All in all, they were happy with the paper.”

The ordinary-level paper should not have presented many problems either. There was one issue with some questions. “The question about delivery systems had too much reading in it,” said Sr O’Connell. “Most of my students gave that one a wide berth.”

“The papers at both levels were well laid out and the instructions were clear,” Mr O’Callaghan said.

“Those details are so important to students, particularly if they’re nervous.”
