A Nigerian political refugee who was told to get off a coach at a ferry port to have his documents checked later assaulted an immigration officer in a row over whether he should get a lift into town, a court heard yesterday.
Mr Sunday Segi Oguandadegte, who had been granted asylum before the incident, denied assaulting the officer and causing a breach of the peace at Dublin Ferryport on February 12th last.
The charges against Mr Oguandadegte (28), Main Street, Rathdrum, Co Wicklow, were dismissed under the Probation of Offenders Act 1907 after he paid £200 compensation and apologised for his behaviour.
He claimed that he was verbally abused by officers and that his hand was hurt when the door of a van he was trying to get into for a lift was slammed shut.
