Tennis:Irish number one Conor Niland won the final of the €42,500 Salzburg Indoor Open after defeating the unseeded Jerzy Janowicz of Poland 7-6 6-7 6-3 in this afternoon's final.
After reaching the semi-finals of the Loughborough Challenger last weekend, Niland will reach a career-high world ranking of 126 when they are published tomorrow morning. Niland picked up 80 points for his win today, along with a cheque for €6,150.
Niland, seeded eighth in the event, reached the final after the number two seed Karol Beck of Slovakia withdraw with a foot injury yesterday morning. In Friday’s quarter- finals he defeated Spain’s Ivan Navarro 7-5 6-3.
Determined to break into the top 100, Niland now moves onto Japan for the Dunlop World Challenger event where he is seeded number two. In his last event of the year, he will face Japanese qualifier Yasutaka Uchiyama in the first round on Tuesday.
