Tennis: Ireland's Conor Niland will meet world number one Novak Djokovic in the opening round of the US Open after he and Davis Cup team-mate Louk Sorensen qualified for the main event last night.
Sorensen, ranked 614th in the world, will meet world number six Robin Soderling of Sweden just months after announcing his retirement from the game after persistent injury.
Both matches are scheduled for early next week.
Djokovic has been in startling form this year, winning nine titles, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon and registering 57 wins in 59 matches.
It will be new territory for Niland, who will be competing in only his second Grand Slam, having been knocked out of Wimbledon in the first round earlier this year.
His match with Djokovic is likely to be in the 22,500-seater Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows.
Both Irishmen came through three rounds of qualifiers this week
