Tennis:Conor Niland enjoyed a straight sets victory over Slovakia's Pavol Cervanek in Flushing Meadows last night as the Ireland number one made it through to the second round of qualifying for next week's US Open.
The Limerick man, who made it through to the main draw at Wimbledon earlier this summer, beat Cervanek 6-1 6-2 to set up a meeting with Taiwan’s Tsung-Hua Yang, who is ranked 223rd in the world, 24 slots below Niland.
A win would leave Niland one round away from a place in the main draw.
Louk Sorensen players his first-round qualifier later today, when he takes on Spain’s Arnau Brugues-Davi, a player ranked over 450 places ahead of him in the world rankings.
Sorensen reached the second round of the singles at the San Sebastian Challenger last week in Spain.
