Nine people were arrested in the centre of Derry early today after police were attacked by a mob.

Police said eight of the arrests were made after a crowd of between 30 and 40 people in their late teens or early 20s attacked police in the Shipquay Street area at about 2am.

The street was packed with revellers when the section of the crowd began hurling bottles and other missiles at police.

One officer suffered a head wound when he was struck by a bottle. His condition was said to be not serious. A short time later a man was arrested after another was taken to hospital with head injuries.
