A Dublin youth who threatened the Irish Daily Mirror’s crime reporter with a knife during a robbery has been given a nine-month sentence.
The youth, now an adult, pleaded guilty at the Dublin Children’s Court yesterday to stealing two smartphones valued at €700 from Cathal McMahon on June 16th last year. For a theft at a Dart station, Judge Ann Ryan gave him a nine-month suspended sentence on condition he did not reoffend for one year.
Judge Ryan said a probation report said he had done well when he attended a training course and addiction counselling. She added that the teen had “threatened the injured party with a small knife and Mr McMahon was in fear”. He also admitted stealing a phone after he “lunged” at a woman at Bayside Dart station last September.
The youth already had 46 criminal convictions.
