Nine road protesters jailed seven days ago for refusing to give undertakings not to interfere with Wicklow County Council's roadworks at the Glen of the Downs were freed by the High Court yesterday. Four other protesters remain in Clover Hill prison in Clondalkin.

Ms Una ni Bhroin, Ms Lisa O'Neill, Ms Mary Lorraine Murphy, Ms Gott Slack, Ms Sophie Schule, Mr Danny Molloy, Mr Diarmuid Moynihan, Mr Peter Jones and Mr Christian Volke man gave individual undertakings to Mr Justice Barr that they would abide by the court order preventing interference with the works. Mr Michael Agnew, Capel Street, Dublin, who was not among the 13 jailed, also undertook to the court yesterday that he would abide by its order.

Mr Justice Barr said the court had granted an injunction restraining interference with the project and the defendants had undertaken not to do so in the future. The court expected that the undertakings would be honoured in their spirit and letter. A trial is to be held later in a challenge by some Glen of the Downs protesters in relation to their alleged contempt. Others involved in that action - Mr Agnew, Mr Volkman and Mr Moynihan - said they did not wish to proceed with the contempt issue and undertook they would not interfere with the council's works.
