Soccer:Barcelona's Lionel Messi suffered ligament damage to his right ankle but no break after being injured in Sunday night's Primera Division game with Atletico Madrid.
Messi was stretchered off following a late challenge by Tomas Ujfalusi in the 2-1 win at the Vicente Calderon, an incident that saw the Atletico defender sent off.
Messi will undergo more tests today to determine the full extent of the injury but, according to the Barca website, the first examinations of the Argentinian's ankle showed just ligament damage.
Barca coach Pep Guardiola said after the match: "He'll be having more tests tomorrow, but in principle a break has been ruled out.
"He's injured and the doctors will tell us how he is. Let's hope the first diagnosis is correct and we can help get him fit again. He's very sad and in tears. These things happen in football."
Messi opened the scoring against Atletico with a left foot finish after Pedro's throughball.
Raul Garcia headed an equaliser for the Rojiblancos soon afterwards but central defender Gerard Pique sealed the points for Barca when he chested down a corner and volleyed into the net on 32 minutes.
