United Nations - UN talks to reunify Cyprus ended yesterday with no clear sign of an easing of the conflict that has kept ethnic Turks and Greeks divided since Turkey occupied the northern third of the island in 1974.
The Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, wrapped up the 14-day consultations at separate meetings with President Glafkos Clerides and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktash. A further round of talks is scheduled on November 1st-10th in Geneva. The UN special adviser, Mr Alvaro de Soto, said there was still a long way to go before a substantive breakthrough.
