The restrictions on Romanians and Bulgarians working in Ireland will not be reviewed until early next year, a Government spokesman said yesterday.

The British government has announced that it is extending the restrictions on Bulgarians and Romanians seeking to come into the country to work until at least the end of next year.

The Irish Government will not consider the question of whether to continue the restriction or lift it until next year, in line with the announcement it made when the ban was first introduced, the spokesman said.

Ireland and Britain have restricted the influx of migrant workers from Bulgaria and Romania since they joined the European Union in January in a shift from the open-door policy adopted towards the eastern European countries who joined the European Union in 2004.
