Athens - The Greek government told ex-King Constantine yesterday that it does not plan to pay compensation for confiscated property because the former monarch owed more money in taxes than what he was due.

The three properties in Corfu, central Greece and Attica, which were nationalised in 1994, are worth 187 billion drachmas (550 million euros) while Constantine's tax bill totals 197 billion drachmas (579.4 million euros), according to a government spokesman.

The comment came after the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Constantine and two of his relatives should be compensated by the Greek government for the confiscation of the three estates.
