A decision on whether the principal of a multi-denominational Gaelscoil in Dunboyne, Co Meath should be dismissed or reinstated has been deferred.

A hearing held today, at which the school's board of management, representatives of the INTO and the school's patron body, an Foras Patrúnachta attended, discussed principal Tomas Ó Dulaing’s suspension from his post in the dispute over religious instruction.

Mr Ó Dulaing was suspended over three months ago after he decided to hold instruction after school hours in order to avoid asking Protestant children to leave the classroom.

The board of management believes the children should be prepared during normal school hours.

Parents at the school, who support principal Mr Tomás Ó Dúlaing, warned at a press conference last week that the school was "staring death in the face".

Several TDs, among them Mr Finian McGrath and Mr Joe Costello, pledged their support for the parents at the event.

The parents, who claim to represent the majority at the school, said the board of management's stance in seeking the principal's dismissal had alienated so many parents that the school's future was now in doubt.
