The RUC has said it has no evidence to sustain a claim that the IRA is mounting checkpoints in the south Armagh village of Camlough. A DUP Assembly member, Mr Paul Berry, said he had been reliably informed the Provisional IRA was patrolling in Camlough.
"It is hardly a coincidence that this latest information has come to public knowledge after the sinister loud bangs that have been heard on two successive nights in the neighbouring village of Forkhill," said Mr Berry, who met police yesterday to speak of his concerns.
An RUC spokesman said police were unaware of any IRA checkpoints in Camlough. He added that police had investigated the reports of loud bangs in the Forkhill area on Sunday and Monday nights but nothing had been found to indicate explosions had occurred.
