No Irish citizens have been arrested arising from allegations of an attack on Spanish police following the death of a 19-year-old Co Leitrim man at a Canary Islands holiday resort.
Mr Michael Clancy, Manor-hamilton, Co Leitrim, drowned while on holiday in Playa del Ingles, Gran Canaria. He is believed to have jumped into a swimming pool at the Green Garden apartments, where he was staying, to help a friend who had got into difficulties.
The accident happened on Sunday night, less than 24 hours after Mr Clancy and his friends had arrived at the resort.
Reports yesterday suggested that police arriving at the scene following the accident were attacked by a number of men, most of them Irish, when they tried to investigate the death.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said yesterday no Irish holiday-makers had been arrested following the alleged attack and the Spanish authorities had made no reports of threatening or violent behaviour on behalf of any Irish people at the resort at the time. The Spanish police were investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr Clancy's death, she said.
This is the second death of a young Irish man at the resort in the last two years.
