None of the 14 Irish players attempting to qualify for this week's Open Championship have made it through to this week's main event at Sandwich.

With approximately seven places up for grabs at each of the four course being used for final qualifying, there had been hope that at least two Irish golfers could book a spot at the Open, joining Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Gary Murphy and Paul McGinley.

However, despite mostly benign conditions, the Irish challengers fell away and were ultimately left out in the cold.

Dunfanaghy's Ciaran McMonagle had put himself well in contention with a 67 at North Foreland yesterday but a 73 today put paid to his chances this afternoon.

Irish amateur champion Mark O'Sullivan was also well-placed going into today's final round. The Galway player shot a 68 at Princes yesterday, to lie joint third overnight, but with the prize within his grasp, a disastrous 75 left him wondering what might have been.

Meanwhile, at Littleston Colm Moriarty shot a fine 69 but coupled with his 73 yesterday, the Athlone golfer fell just short.

Elsewhere, Ian Woosnam kept his run of Open championships going with a dramatic suddendeath play-off chip-in at the final qualifying competition today.

Woosnam, who has played in every Open since 1981, thought he had blown hishopes when he bogeyed the final two holes of his second round at Prince's.

But four hours later the former world number one - third at Lytham only twoyears ago - found himself battling with four others for three places inThursday's starting line-up.

It did not look good when he missed the green at the first, but after changingfrom a wedge to a nine-iron he holed from nearly 70 feet.

"It was about time I had a bit of luck," he said. "I'm happy and I'm goingfor a pint!

"The chip was from a bit of a fluffy lie, but it came out absolutelyperfect."

Earlier Woosnam had declared his driving "shocking" after a secondsuccessive 70 left him joint fifth of the 96 players.

He was left with a long wait after missing the green at the short 17th andthen came up short of the green both with his second shot to the last and withhis chip.
