A prosecutor parachuted in by Portugal's attorney general to oversee the case also said last night that Gerry and Kate McCann may not be the only line of inquiry.
The statement from Luis Bilro Verao said no new evidence had emerged in the fortnight since they were declared "arguidos", or official suspects, to justify calling them for new interviews at present.
The announcement came amid speculation that Portuguese detectives had been poised to travel to the Britain with a list of fresh questions for the couple to answer over the disappearance of their daughter from their rented apartment in Praia Da Luz on May 3rd.
While they remain arguidos, they have now been informed that other lines of inquiry are not to be ruled out by detectives.
But it was unclear last night whether the position had been forced on the police by a judge reviewing a 4,000-page dossier of evidence provided by detectives.
The prosecutor also announced that no new bail conditions are to be placed upon them.
