Forecasts for the coming days
TODAY
Widespread ice and frost is forecast for this morning with further wintry showers of sleet and snow expected in the midlands and north Leinster.
Drier and brighter spells are likely to extend from the west with temperatures reaching highs of between zero and three degrees in most areas. However, the west coast may see temperatures of up to seven degrees.
Tonight is expected to be dry but extremely cold with temperatures falling as low as minus eight degrees, resulting in sharp frosts and freezing fog in some areas.
TOMORROW
Most areas are expected to be dry but a wintry band of showers is likely to move in from the west and northwest.
Temperatures will rise to between three and six degrees near the Atlantic coast. Elsewhere it is likely to remain between zero and three degrees, with a partial thaw occurring.
Temperatures are expected to fall to minus six or seven degrees tomorrow night along the east coast and in the midlands.
MONDAY
Met Éireann said most areas will be dry, bright and sunny on Monday. Fog may linger across parts of the midlands, with the chance of a few wintry showers feeding into west and northwest. Temperature will rise to between three and six degrees near Atlantic coasts, but will remain colder elsewhere with daily high temperatures of between zero and three degrees.
LONG RANGE
A significant thaw of snow and ice is unlikely to occur in the midlands or east of the country until the end of next week. Snow falls will become less frequent but sub-zero temperatures will persist and accumulations of compacted ice will see conditions remaining dangerous for motorists and pedestrians.
