Golf:Nine of Europe's triumphant Ryder Cup side - plus captain Colin Montgomerie - returned to action at Kingsbarns today. But it was on the Old Course at St Andrews where most of the best golf was to be found in the early stages of the Dunhill Links Championship.
Three courses are used for the celebrity pro-am and of the four early pacesetters at four under par three of them — English pair Robert Rock and Paul Waring and Welshman Stephen Dodd — were at the Home of Golf.
They shared top spot with big-hitting Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, who put the disappointment of not making the Ryder Cup behind him with four birdies in his first seven holes at Kingsbarns.
Best of the Ryder Cup squad were Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington and Martin Kaymer, who were all on three under. Montgomerie, who was trying to get his career back on track after falling from 135th to 425th in the world during his term as captain.
The 47-year-old Scot birdied the long third, bogeyed the seventh and eighth and then returned to one under with two more birdies. Lee Westwood, who needs a top two finish to replace Tiger Woods as world number one, was two under after six.
