A fund for victims of the Troubles who lived in the Republic has been extended for another year and given an additional one million euro in funding, it emerged tonight.
The Remembrance Commission was established by the Government in October 2003 to assist families of those injured or killed during the 30-year conflict.
"The Cabinet today agreed to a request from Justice Minister Michael McDowell to extend the term of the Commission for another year and to allocate additional funding of one million euro," a Government spokesman said tonight.
Bereaved families of victims of the Troubles living within the Republic are entitled to an 'acknowledgement payment' of up to €15,000 under the Commission.
Assistance is also given for medical treatment for surviving spouses and children who suffer from economic hardship.
Victims who cannot work due to injuries received are also eligible for funding. The Commission launched an advertising campaign earlier this year to inform people of the scheme's work.
