The body established by the British government to draw up policy on the safe management of nuclear waste has given a commitment to hold consultative meetings in Ireland before it finalises its policy.

The commitment was given by the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) during last weekend's annual meeting of the Nuclear Free Local Authorities Association in Glasgow. Louth County Council is the only local authority in the Republic to have joined the organisation so far. The committee's remit is to review the options for safely managing Britain's radioactive waste.

Louth councillor Mr Michael O'Dowd (FG), welcomed the British promise to consult irish interests.

He said that the possible storage of nuclear waste on the west coast of Britain and the option of storage at sea are two specific concerns he will raise with CoRWM.
