The Connacht Tribunephotographer who took historic images of US president John F Kennedy in the west just five months before his death has been awarded an honorary degree by NUI Galway.
Stan Shields had worked for a year with the local paper when he was assigned to cover the visit. He was able to jump into the front seat of Kennedy’s car for a close-up.
He had recorded hundreds of news events since then, “illuminating for his readers the extraordinary in ordinary lives”, NUIG programme director Bernadette O’Sullivan said in the citation.
