She has been shot at, arrested, detained and deported, but the Irish woman who spent a week in the Church of Nativity in besieged Bethlehem said last night she still wanted to go back.

Arriving at Dublin Airport last night, Ms Mary Kelly (49) said she would be going to the Israeli embassy to ask about returning to the troubled region as soon as she could.

Conditions in the church, where the Co Cork nurse had gone to distribute food and medical assistance to Palestinians inside, were extreme.

She said she was disappointed that there was no protection or support from the Christian or international community.
