Nurses from the Accident and Emergency department of Cavan General Hospital have today voted in favour of strike action, beginning on Wednesday.

The Irish Nurses Organisation said the action follows three months of negotiations to address the difficulties encountered in running a 24 hour A&E service.

They said that due to the absence of 24 hour medical, clerical, portering, security and attendant cover; nurses were expected to provide non-nursing cover. According to the Union, nurses administered clerical check-in procedures for 48.7 per cent of all patients in the week May 14th to May 20th.

The Irish Nurses Union is asking the management to increase the number of nurses and to re-deploy the necessary support structures to A&E immediately.
