THE novel Cre na Cille by Mairtin O Cadhain - regarded as one of the outstanding works of literature in Irish this century - will be republished in September, according to the writer's nephew, Mr Sean O Cadhain.
The novel has been out of print for a number of years, a source of much criticism in Irish language circles. It will be republished by Sairseai O Marcaigh. O Cadhain's collected papers have been presented to Trinity College, Dublin, by his relatives.
O Cadhain, a prominent republican who was interned during the 1940s and later became a professor of Irish at TCD, is regarded as perhaps the greatest writer in Irish this century. He was the first person writing only in Irish to be elected to the Irish Academy of Letters.
The collection includes manuscripts and proofs of his novels and short stories, poetry, journalism, a folklore collection, work on dialects and notes on Irish grammar. It also includes his library collection, including a number of books annotated by the writer.
