The car in which the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Mr Ó Cuív, was injured in a collision is to be examined by its manufacturers today.
Engineers inspected the car in Killarney to establish why it burst into flames after the crash with a rental car driving by two American tourists on Monday night.
The car has now been transported to Ireland for further tests.
Fire officers at the scene believe the severe impact along with a fairly full petrol tank might have contributed to the car going on fire. Fire crews were also concerned by the fact a gun belonging to the minister's Garda driver was in the boot of the car.
Gardaí in Co Kerry are continuing to investigate the causes of the accident.
The female tourist from St Louis is in a stable condition in hospital while her husband is still in intensive care.
Mr Ó Cuív suffered shock, bruising, a laceration and a broken finger. His secretary was still in hospital last night, suffering from severe bruising.
