Athletics: Ireland's Eileen O'Keeffe has finished a commendable sixth in the final of the women's hammer at the World Athletics championships in Osaka, Japan.

The Kilkenny athlete's first throw of  70.93 metres was good enough to secure that position as her following five throws fell short.

German's Betty Heidler secured the goal medal with a throw of 74.76 metres.

O'Keeffe set a personal and seasonal best of 73.21 metres earlier in the summer and with form like that, not to mention the confidence gained in Japan, the 26-year-old could be a medal prospect at next year's Beijing Olympics.

David Campbell ran within half a second of his personal best despite spending some of last weekend in hospital.

The Mullingar native finished seventh in his 800m heat in a time of 1.46.47.  But despite not qualifying, the performance was a considerable achievement considering his recent illness.

Indeed, the 25-year-old was lucky to even make the start line as he was hospitalised with an acute stomach bug on Sunday and spent time on a drip to aid recovery for today's heats.

Alistair Cragg, touted to at least make the final, was a big disappointment in his 5,000m heat, finishing 13th and failing to progress.

The 27-year-old South African-born runner never looked comfortable despite the temperature not being as stifling as in the previous five night's of competition.

Cragg fell off the pace three laps from home and recorded a time of 13 minutes 59.45 seconds. Ethiopia's Tariku Bekele won the qualifier in 13:46.42.
