Leeds manager David O'Leary wants his team to move away from Elland Road to a new purpose-built stadium.
United will soon be canvassing shareholders and supporters and revealing details of possible sites for a new ground.
According to O'Leary a move will improve Leeds. "If we can move and build a brand new, modern stadium it will only make Leeds bigger and better," the 43-year-old Irishman told the official Leeds website.
"For the fans it would provide quality facilities to watch what I hope will be a quality team."
O'Leary believes sentiment cannot stand in the way of progress. "If you look at our ground it is old and, for instance, the stand the team run out from has been there a long time," he said.
"Look at grounds like the one at Sunderland which has a fantastic atmosphere and has made the club bigger."
Leeds have sold a record number of season tickets, topping 26,000 for the first time.
