Tyrone's former Footballer of the Year Stephen O'Neill, plagued by injury problems in recent seasons, has retired from intercounty football aged just  27.

O'Neill, whose latest injury setback had ruled him out of the forthcoming national football league, bows out with immediate effect.

Earlier this week it emerged the double All-Ireland winner suffered complications in his rehabilitation following knee surgery, leading to fears he could miss the Ulster championship.

And while many will surely feel O'Neill had plenty of year's ahead of him, the prolific forward clearly feels the time is right to call it a day.
